We are Elation.

We're a company of passionate, tech-savvy individuals who have a strong desire to create fantastic tools to make physicians' lives easier. We've spent years working in busy physician practices and have designed our web-based electronic medical record (EMR) system from the physician's perspective. Each one of us on the team has spent hours shadowing in a physician practice to understand how the medical record is used throughout the practice and within the exam room. We've developed ElationEMR to be an intuitive, easy to use solution that helps you quickly find, digest and act upon relevant clinical information to care for your patients. (Interested in joining?)

Growing up watching my father care for patients in his primary care practice, I've seen not only the impact healthcare professionals have on the lives of individuals but also the difficulties that healthcare providers must deal with to do the job they love: providing patient care.

I'm convinced that information technology will significantly improve the delivery of healthcare -- but only with better IT tools than are generally available now. Prior to Elation, I worked with senior healthcare leaders to help digitize health records within large health systems and with front-line physicians to use those applications at the point of care. Rather than help physicians provide better care, existing implementations too often leave physicians with sub-optimal tools to perform life-changing services. It's amazing that physicians still need to figure out work-arounds to counter system flaws that could harm patients. Elation was established to change that.

Conan holds a Bachelor of Science with distinction in Microbiology & Immunology with double minors in Management and Economics from McGill University, as well as a Masters of Health Sciences in Health Finance & Management from Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health.

I've been involved in physicians' practices for as long as I can remember. My dad is a physician with his own practice, and at various points in time I've served as full-time receptionist, billing staff, and office manager. I've also been fortunate enough to interact with healthcare at a policy level. Prior to founding Elation, I was an economics professor at Stanford University, focused on healthcare and game theory, and in addition I spent two years as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholar in Health Policy at UC Berkeley and UCSF. I also have a background in computer science.

I helped found Elation because I felt compelled. I see an immense threat to patient care brought on by inadequate IT systems and a vast disconnect between policy-makers and front-line clinicians. Technology has offered dramatic improvements in so many other aspects of life. Why not this critically important one? That's where Elation fits in, and that's why I'm here.

Kyna holds a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Math, summa cum laude, and a Masters of Science in Computer Science, both from Harvard University, as well as a PhD in Economics from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Previously, she was a professor at Stanford University's Department of Economics.

I live and breathe everything related to the product and the user experience. My goal is to ensure that every product decision is made with the physician in mind. I love that at Elation, I have a real opportunity to make a positive impact on the quality of care by providing the physician with powerful diagnostic tools. As a user advocate, I have gravitated towards product roles, most recently serving as a Program Manager on the Microsoft Mediaroom team. I strive to live and work passionately. Occasionally you'll find me baking random goods for the Elation team, trying to make people laugh with awkward jokes and tangoing around the world.

As a pre-med student in college, I worked at hospitals and was exposed to the frustration of working with some inefficient EMR systems. As a result, I gained curiosity into health technologies and was blown away by the potential for many innovations to revolutionize healthcare if correctly implemented. As a result, I was amazed when I was introduced to Elation, which cleared up all previous frustration I had as an EMR user. I am pleased to now be supporting Elation users and ensuring that we help to provide the best patient care possible. Aside from helping Elation users save lives every day, I am a huge foodie, concert junkie, and a Korean-Californian-Texan triple threat.

Since early in my software development career, I’ve understood that programming and automation are simply a means to an end. All we can do on a computer can in theory be done manually, but if done so, the costs and loss in efficiency can be a tremendous burden. By contributing to the development of Elation’s platform, I have a real opportunity to enable ways that physicians can give better care to their patients. ElationEMR has been designed from the ground up to improve efficiency for the physicians and their staff.

Prior to Elation, I was involved in implementing new technologies for the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) to facilitate knowledge exchange and dialog between physicians, researchers and panelists. During the same period I also developed software aimed at facilitating internal communication and document-sharing for European medical societies. Most recently, I was an early developer at Busbud where I was challenged to build infrastructure able to handle millions of intercity bus schedules on a daily basis, and create adaptive algorithms to automate validation of data accuracy.

Louis has close to 10 years experience in software development and automation.

I moved to San Francisco from New York City and was eager to immerse myself in a company that was truly trying to change the world. I found that very quickly with Elation. I’ve seen first hand the disconnect that exists when physicians have to give the majority of their effort to their EMR rather than to their patients. That disconnect promotes physician burnout and is an outcome that has no winners. That’s why I get such joy working at Elation. Our physicians are thrilled to have us be a part of their practices, and that excitement when they realize they’re done wrestling with their EMR is inspiring to be around. When I’m not at Elation, I enjoy exploring the outdoors, watching documentaries, and looking at pictures of cats on the internet.

Elation stands in stark contrast to the patient care technologies I’ve experienced in the past as the priority here is the provider-patient relationship, not the administrative department. My mission is to ensure that our physicians and staff members receive the same level of care and attention they provide their patients.

After 3 decades as an M.D., I've found that the medical record is not just a record; it is the most important tool in my armamentarium for diagnosing and treating disease. In a day and age when information technology is revolutionizing our lives for the better, it should revolutionize my medical record.

Legacy EMRs, however, are not built with the clinical encounter in mind and in fact cause physicians to spend significantly more time in caring for the same patient load. I've always blamed it on the immaturity of information technology, likening the situation to the 11th century Chinese adventurer who tried to reach the moon by tying himself to a rocket: right idea, immature technology. But then I started using ElationEMR: it is built with the clinical encounter in mind, and is meant to provide me with a greatly improved tool for diagnosing and treating disease.

Dr. Fong graduated from the University of Alberta Medical School, and has practiced as a family physician in Canada, in Illinois and in California. Dr. Fong currently practices in Walnut Creek, California and besides his office practice, also actively attends on his own patients who are admitted to the hospital or to nursing homes.

I have an ongoing interest in improving health care delivery. Five years ago while consulting with the venture capital firm of Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, I became interested in the EMR as a means to do this. Unfortunately, available EMRs to date are sorely deficient and of little value to the practitioner. I was looking to do better and was fortunate to be introduced to ElationEMR, they having accomplished the first quantum shift in EMR design that I have seen. I am pleased to be able to contribute my experience and ideas to this worthy project.
